Siding for Havertown homes

Many Havertown houses pair stone or brick with siding on the dormers, gable ends, additions or second floor. We replace those sections so they sit cleanly against the masonry and look right from the street.

Where siding goes on a stone or brick Havertown house

On a home that's mostly stone or brick, siding usually covers the parts the masons didn't: shed and gable dormers, the gable triangles, rear additions, enclosed porches, and sometimes the whole second story. Those areas take the most weather and get the least attention, so it's common to find soft trim, failing paint, or old siding that's cracked and loose.

The tricky part is where siding meets masonry. Flashing and trim at that line have to shed water away from the stone, not behind it.

Vinyl vs. fiber cement

A general comparison. We install James Hardie and CertainTeed siding.

Twins: matching your neighbor's side

Twins are seen as one building from the street, so a sharp mismatch in color or profile stands out. You aren't obliged to match your neighbor, but many owners talk it over first. We can bring samples to look at against both halves, and we finish the edge at the property line neatly so either side can be redone later without a fight.

Roof first or siding first?

Should I replace the roof or the siding first? Usually the roof first, or both together. Roof work disturbs the top courses of siding at dormers and walls where step flashing and counter-flashing tuck behind it. Doing the roof first lets the siding crew finish over new flashing instead of cutting into new siding later. On one contract, both trades can be sequenced in a single visit. See roof replacement.

Permits and historic homes

Do I need a permit to replace siding in Havertown? Yes. Haverford Township lists roofing and siding together among the residential permits it accepts online (Building & Codes), and its 2026 fee schedule charges siding at $20 per $1,000 of project cost (fee schedule). If the house is on the Township's Historic Resource Survey, covering exterior walls can also trigger Historical Commission review, so check with the Zoning Officer first.

The Township's historic preservation ordinance counts "covering of any portion of any roof or exterior wall" of a listed resource as an example of demolition (Haverford Township Code, historic preservation). Our permit guide explains the review.

Siding questions

Can you replace siding on just the dormers?
Yes. Siding just the dormers or an addition is a normal job on a house with masonry lower floors, and it's priced on its own.
Will new siding fix my drafty upstairs?
Siding with a proper weather barrier behind it can help with air leaks, but insulation and windows usually matter more. We'll be straight about what siding will and won't change.
Vinyl or fiber cement for a 1920s Dutch Colonial?
Either can work. On a 1920s house the profile, exposure and trim details matter as much as the material, so we bring samples to compare against the stone or brick. If the house is a listed historic resource, talk to the Township before choosing. We install James Hardie fiber cement and CertainTeed siding, and we'll walk you through samples of each.
